You should replace your manual toothbrush or electric toothbrush head every 3-6 months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed. A worn brush is less effective at cleaning and can harm your gums.

Common signs of gum disease (periodontal disease) include bleeding gums, swollen or tender gums, bad breath, receding gums, and loose teeth. Early detection during your dental visits at Old Towne Dental can prevent more serious issues.
Why are dental X-rays important?
Dental X-rays help us see problems not visible to the naked eye, like cavities between teeth, bone loss, impacted teeth, or infections. They are a key part of preventive care and are safe with today’s low-radiation digital technology.
What causes tooth sensitivity and how is it treated?
Tooth sensitivity can be caused by worn enamel, gum recession, tooth decay, cracked teeth, or exposed roots. Treatment may include desensitizing toothpaste, fluoride treatments, or dental restorations depending on the cause.
What foods and drinks stain your teeth the most?
Common culprits include coffee, tea, red wine, soda, berries, and tomato sauces. Smoking can also cause yellowing. Regular cleanings and professional teeth whitening at Old Towne Dental can help reverse stains.
What is the best way to prevent cavities?
Prevent cavities by brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, flossing daily, eating a low-sugar diet, drinking plenty of water, and visiting Old Towne Dental for routine cleanings and checkups every six months.
Is fluoride safe and why is it important?
Yes, fluoride is safe and highly effective at preventing tooth decay. It strengthens tooth enamel and can even reverse early stages of cavities. It’s commonly found in toothpaste, community water supplies, and professional fluoride treatments.
When should my child have their first dental visit?
Your child should visit the dentist right before they start school. Early visits help prevent cavities and build comfort with dental care from an early age.
What is a dental sealant and how does it prevent cavities?
A dental sealant is a thin protective coating applied to the chewing surfaces of back teeth. It helps prevent food and bacteria from getting stuck in grooves, lowering the risk of cavities—especially in children and teens.
